Make Your Own Dog Bed With Love — And At a Price That Can’t Be Beat

Make your own dog bed? Absolutely! Not only is it an easy and affordable project, but it’s also one of the most loving and thoughtful things you can do for your furry friend.

A homemade dog bed may not have the same designer label as those fancy ones in pet boutiques, but it carries something far more valuable: you.

Every stitch, every scrap of fabric, and every familiar scent will remind your pup that you’re close by whenever he curls up to rest.

Materials To Make Your Own Dog Bed

Here’s where the magic happens — you don’t need to buy anything fancy. Just gather worn items you already have around the house - the more associated with you, the better:

  • Old socks and t-shirts
  • Bed linens you don’t use anymore
  • Tired and tattered blankets
  • Even that lumpy old pillow you’ve been meaning to replace

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, and even freshly laundered fabric will still carry your scent. To your pup, that’s better than any store-bought cushion. Snuggling into your worn fabrics will feel like snuggling right up next to you.  And that will be doggy heaven to him.

Keeping Up Appearances

Now, maybe you’re hesitating because you like the look of those chic dog beds that impress the neighbors. No problem — you can have the best of both worlds.

Buy that fancy dog sofa bed and put in a place where your visitors will more or less trip over it😉, or at least won't be able to avoid seeing it. And, that will take care of keeping-up-appearances.

But when the house is quiet and bedtime rolls around, I'll bet your old rags, your dog will make a bee line for his DIY dog bed filled with your scent.🛏

That’s where he can dream his little dreams feeling your presence all around him, safe and secure!

Benefits You Can Brag About

Making your own dog bed isn’t just sweet and sentimental — there are some no-so-obvious benefits that will make you feel really good about your DIY dog bed.

  • Eco-friendly: You’re recycling and reusing materials that might otherwise end up in the landfill.
  • Cost-effective: It’s basically a free dog bed — no shopping required.
  • Custom fit: Make it the perfect size for your Chihuahua or your Great Dane.
  • Washable: Everything goes right in the washer, unlike some bulky store-bought beds.
  • Non-toxic peace of mind: No mystery fillers or chemicals.
  • Quick & easy: You can whip one up in less than an hour.

Step By Step Instructions

So, let's begin. There's really not much to it.

To make your own dog bed, my preference, and what I suggest, is to start with some old cotton pillowcases to hold the filling. Nothing will be more completely infused with "You" than something that you have put your head on night after night.

Ready to get started? Here’s a simple step-by-step method I recommend:

  1. Choose your base. Old pillowcases work beautifully — preferably cotton as it's soft and breathable. For small dogs, one is enough. For bigger pups, join two cases together by splitting a seam and sewing them into one large cover

  2. Prepare your filling. Cut up larger items (t-shirts, towels, blankets) into smaller pieces. This makes the bed fluffier and easier to wash. You can even add foam from an old mattress topper for extra cushion.

  3. Fill it up. Stuff the pillowcase with your chosen materials until it’s cozy but not overstuffed.

  4. Close it securely.
  • Easiest option: use the existing hem of the pillowcase and thread a drawstring through it. Tie it tight, then place it with the closure side facing down.
  • For a sleeker look: add velcro to the flap edges for a neat, washable closure.
  • If you sew, closing it with a zipper across the opening works just as well.

That’s it — you’ve just created a personalized, DIY dog bed your pup will adore!
