List Of Small Dog Breeds
Including Toy Dog Breeds And Miniature Dogs

bichon frise

This list of small dog breeds includes some of the most charming and headstrong little dogs around. Well, when you think about it, they have to make up for their lack of stature by being a bit more forceful and confidant! Plus, most small dogs know they can get by with quite a lot just because they are so cute!

But if you're looking for a cuddly lap dog, do check out the breed characteristics carefully because they're not all couch potatoes. While some of them definitely love to be in your lap, others are so active the only time they use your lap is as a springboard on their way to something more interesting.

Then there's the matter of grooming. Some of the small dogs do have glamorous and abundant coats which means regular appointments at the doggie salon to keep up their appearance. On the other hand, there are a few hairless small dogs or those with easy care coats.

So here's the rundown on the small dogs. Sizewise, they range from very small - like the Chihuahua who has the distinction of being recognised as the smallest dog in the world at an average height of 6"-8" - to dog as tall as the Shetland Sheepdog standing 13-16 inches in height.

While this list is fairly comprehensive, not all the profiles have been completed, so check back often to get the latest updates and additions. In the meantime, click on the links in the list of small dog breeds to get more information about any of them.

As you take a closer look at the profiles of the pets included in this list of small dog breeds, you will get a better idea of how they might fit into your family situation.

Some of the really little dogs understandably don't like to be mishandled by young children and may do better in an adult environment. Others are tough enough to fit in anywhere, but don't like to be left alone.

Some have a reputation as barkers and may not be the best for apartment living.

Exercise is another factor to consider especially if you have a busy life. All of these dogs need a daily walk or two, but some like the Wire Fox Terrier or the Parson Russell Terrier aka Jack Russell, are very active and need more extensive exercise to use up their energy.
