Mar 13, No Hungry Dogs - a great story!

A great story out of Cincinnati, where two non-profit animal groups organized a drive to obtain donations of pet food and related staple items.

The donated items were then handed out to pet owners down on their luck and needing a helping hand to care for their dogs and cats.

Sadly, when pet owners get caught in a financial bind, they often give up their pets. Since the recession began in 2007, it is estimated that 1-2 million pets have been surrendered or abandoned.

A few more of these food drives could save a lot of pets from being given up. Hopefully this event will spark others to follow their lead.

Mar 7, Dog Doors In Rural Areas

Mountain lions can get in through dog doors - especially thin ones that are starving - as was recently reported in a news story.

In this particular case, the dogs inside the house were engaged in a two-hour battle with the lion. Ultimately, one of the owner's dogs was killed and two were seriously injured.

The mountain lion had to be tranquilized before animal control experts could remove him from the property.

The upshot of this sad story is that while dog doors are a great convenience, extra caution is needed when pet owners live in areas near wildlife. Wild animals whose habitat is reduced by urban development, get hungry and are apt to venture into residential areas in search of food.

One solution to keeping out unwanted animals and snakes is an <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F6UBFC?ie=UTF8&tag=allaboflo-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001F6UBFC"rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=allaboflo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B001F6UBFC" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />
electronic dog door</a>. This type of door can only be opened by a smart-key worn on the dog's collar and then the door locks automatically once the pet has passed through.

Feb 24, Mixed Dog Breeds Alert

I think it's quite exciting that the AKC (American Kennel Club) has decided to open up the field to include mixed dog breeds in competitive events.

Beginning April 1, 2010, owners of mixed breed dogs can now register their dogs to participate in agility, obedience and rally competition. One condition is that dogs must be spayed or neutered.

Dog owners who are interested should, as a first step, go to the AKC website (akc.org) and and enroll their dog in the Canine Partners Listing program.

While at the website, check the AKC dog events page to look for breed clubs in your area that offer training classes.

You will then need to contact the clubs that sponsor competitive events to find out if they are opening them up to mixed breeds. From then on, it's just a matter of completing the entry forms when you think your dog is ready to compete.

Check out the traits of the breeds that make up your mixed breed dog's heritage, so that you can decide what type training would best suit their background. You can <a href="http://www.dog-spoiling-made-easy.com/dog-breeds.html">check dog breeds here.</a>

Good luck!

Feb 22, Good Samaritan Puppy Rescue Needs Your Help

There's one lady I think deserves our recognition for rescuing four puppies that were found in a plastic bag in a trash can - if you can believe it!

Her name is Charlotte Troy and when she heard about the day-old puppies without a mother, she brought them home. Her plan was to see if her female <a href="http://www.dog-spoiling-made-easy.com/Dachshund.html">Dachshund</a>, Cher, would accept them.

Cher not only accepted them, but cleaned them up, nursed them and literally became their mother!! Aren't dogs fantastic?

It appears that the puppies came from a from a large breed mix, possibly Shepherd/Lab., so they'll soon outgrow their little mother.

Charlotte would like to have them adopted when they are old enough and she would appreciate any donations towards their veterinary expenses.

Charlotte is the owner of a grooming and boarding facility in Pawleys, S. Carolina, and can be reached at 843-237-7117.

Feb 21, National Pet Dental Month

Yes, February is National Pet Dental Month and time to remind all dog lovers that our canines' canines need regular inspections.

When we get a card from our dentist's office confirming our appointment for a check-up and cleaning, we can use this as a reminder that that Rover's teeth be examined too.

The importance of pet dental care cannot be overstressed. So many dog health problems are related to neglected oral health.

But, if we take the time to give our dog's teeth a regular brushing, chances are the vet will be impressed and Rover will be more healthy.

So let's give our dogs' teeth the attention they deserve and give them <a href="http://www.dog-spoiling-made-easy.com/dog-dental-product.html">something to smile about!

When it comes to exercise, it always seems easier to do if you have a buddy "suffering" along with you!

So if you're in the midst of struggling with your new year's resolution to stick with your exercise program, my suggestion is to try taking your dog out for a run.

One dog that will not mind "suffering" is the <a href="toydogs-italiangreyhound.html">Italian Greyhound</a>. These little dogs are full of energy and are excellent sprinters making them ideal for interval training. Interval training also gives you a chance to slow down to a walk and get your breath back!!

Running is one of the best ways to keep weight off. So what are you waiting for?

Feb 14, Warning Of Another Harmful Substance To Dogs

There are many harmful threats in the world around us that can affect our pets. In cold weather, we especially need to protect them from things like anti-freeze and salted pavements that can burn their paws, etc.

Now another dangerous threat has recently surfaced, causing a warning to be issued to dog owners. Namely Xylitol, an artificial sweetener.

This ingredients is found in common food items and particularly candy and chewing gum.

Although this sugar substitute is not considered harmful to humans, it reportedly can cause serious harm to a dog or even kill it!

According to the Humane Society in Washington, more than 4,000 dogs were poisoned by Xylitol in 2008.

This artificial sweetener apparently affects a dog's blood sugar level and can cause liver failure. If a dog survives from ingesting it, he still can go through a rough recovery time in the hospital.

Most dogs as we know are very inquisitive pets and not very discriminating about eating anything they find especially food. For example we know they find the garbage irresistible!

For this reason, it's wise to keep this in mind when you have artificially sweetened foods in the house such as candy bars, granola bars, or chewing gum so that they are not left lying around where your pet may be able to get at them.

Feb 14, Beagle Alert

According to a recent new story, a Beagle mother and her puppies were found nearly frozen on a farm in Butler County, Ohio.

Apparently they had been dumped there by someone at the time the mother dog was going into labor - unbelievable as this may seem.

It was fortunate that the owner of the farm found the Beagle and her litter before they froze to death and rescued them. With temperatures dipping down to the teens, they would not have made it.

The Beagle mother had somehow managed to deliver six puppies in a bed of snow and hay that she made, and went on to deliver a seventh puppy later.

The mother and her pups are now at the Animal Friends Rescue in Hamilton, where they will stay for eight weeks and then be available for adoption.

And with Valentine's Day just on the horizon, why not plan a date that includes your favorite dog pal.

You could keep it cheap and celebrate at home with Rover and your significant other. Put on a movie - one for your dog, and then one for yourselves, get out some popcorn and of course some doggie treats. Your dog will love it.

The Tri-County Humane Society reports that a 9-week-old female Shih Tzu puppy was brought into them on Wednesday by two girls who said they found it.

The young girls handed over the puppy to the veterinary technician on duty and then left before filling out the usual paper work.

The puppy is at emergency care at Calusa Animal Hospital in Boca Raton.

The owner has not come forward at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call Tri-County Humane Society at

Feb 4, Rescue Pregnant Dog While House On Fire!

What would you do if you had to choose between helping your dog in the midst of giving birth, or put out a fire in your kitchen?

This was the situation a man in La Selva, California was faced with recently.

Apparently Walter Hiatt's dog crawled underneath his house as she went into labor to deliver her pups. Thinking this was not the best place for the delivery, Mr. Hiatt tried to entice her to come out.

Meanwhile, during this distraction, the chicken he was frying on the stove exploded and caught the kitchen on fire. Now he had two problems on his hands and the dilemma of which to handle first.

Luckily, a quick-thinking friend who was there at the time, called emergency services about the fire while Mr. Hiatt, realizing that he couldn't put out the fire, kept up his efforts to pull the dog to a safe place and finally succeeded.

As the fire was being put out, the Fire Marshal helped the Australian Shepherd deliver the first four of her pups in the back of Mr. Hiatt's pickup! Although the kitchen was lost, at least the story has a happy ending for the Mr. H's dog and her puppies!

Jan 31, German Shepherd Gets Rescued by Helicoper

<img src="http://www.dog-spoiling-made-easy.com/images/rescued-gs-dog.jpg"align="left" hspace="7">
One very lucky German Shepherd/mix, caught in the recent raging flood waters around Los Angeles, was safely rescued.

The obviously very frightened dog was airlifted in the arms of a rescue worker who was lowered on a line from a helicopter.

The dog who was not wearing a collar identification and not microchipped, was taken to a shelter where after 7 days, he got another lucky break.

Someone saw the news reports and recognized the dog as that of her friend - an elderly non-English speaking woman. It is believed that the dog was let out by a gate being left open.

The dog was overjoyed when someone he recognized came to pick him up.

The message in this story is that it could have ended very sadly for the <a href="http://www.dog-spoiling-made-easy.com/german_shepherd_dog.html">German Shepherd </a>. Dogs are really at risk of never making it back home if they are lost or in danger when they are not wearing a <a href="http://www.dog-spoiling-made-easy.com/dog-ID-tags.html">dog ID tag</a> or other identification.

But happily it ended well!

Jan 20, Those Amazing Rescue Dogs!

A story I just read has a two-fold message about dogs and those who care deeply about them.

The story relates how a Search And Rescue Dog named Hunter,
working alongside a firefighter, identified the location of three girls trapped under
four-feet rubble in earthquake-devastated Haiti.

After Hunter gave his trained bark signal to point out the victims' location, they were able to be rescued by a Task Force crew from California - highly trained in rescue work.

Hunter is one of those very smart <a href="http://www.dog-spoiling-made-easy.com/Border_Collie.html">Border Collies</a> that received his training from the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (NDSDF).

One message that stands out to me in this story is: never underestimate the marvelous abilities dogs have that can be tapped into with appropriate <a href="http://www.dog-spoiling-made-easy.com/dog-training.html">dog training</a>techniques.

And the second message is about the NDSDF, a non-profit group that clearly loves dogs. The proof of this is that they are the only such group to select <b>rescued dogs</b> to receive specialized training for locating survivors in a disaster situation.

Once trained, these amazing dogs are partnered to work with firefighters around the country. At no charge I might add!

Jan 16, Your Dog's Dental Health

I just got to thinking about a great new year resolution for your dog - one that would really be a big benefit to him.

Cleaning his teeth!

Actually, you'll have to be the one to carry out the resolving part since I've never heard of a dog being able to do this for himself :-)

I know this area of a dog's grooming is often overlooked by some owners - you know who you are...so now's a chance to make up for it.

On a practical note, your dog's dental health is so connected to his overall health condition, that you'll probably be saving him from a lot of other diseases that often result from neglected teeth.

Plus, you'll probably save yourself from expensive vet visits and that is something both you and your dog can smile about.

So, how about it? Be a good pack leader and <a href="http://www.dog-spoiling-made-easy.com/dog-dental-product.html">go here</a> to find out how do a dog dental cleaning.
