May 4, A Cairn Terrier With An Interesting Mission

We all know that dogs have an incredible sense of smell, but how many have a chance to use it in a unique way - rescuing wildlife.

So it was with interest that I just read about one Cairn Terrier who is doing this. He goes by the name of Ridley and he is putting his nose to work as a volunteer, assisting the Turtle Patrol along the Padre Island National Seashore.

So far, this talented terrier has done a great job in sniffing out/saving several nests of the Kemps ridley sea turtles, which are an endangered species.

Well done Ridley and kudos to his owners for developing his ability to do this job.

The Cairn Terrier is a smart little bundle of charm so it may come as no surprise that this breed has been chosen for roles in the movies. There is one cairn in particular that gained fame......

Apr 29, Dog Days Of Summer - Tips

Summertime, when the livin' is more fun, is also a time your dog needs protection from heat exhaustion.

Aside from the no-no of leaving a dog in a hot parked car, which "dog spoilers" would never do, care does need to be taken during play activities and walks.

Dark coated dogs and those with shorter airways i.e. Pugs, Pekes, Boxers etc., are more prone to heatstroke. It's a good idea to know the warning signs and what to do if your dog gets overheated.

Apr 27, Dog Theft Trauma

I just read a devastating story about a couple who had one of their dogs stolen. This dog had been similar to a service dog to the family, helping them get through several health challenges.

Now I hope this never happens to any of you, but in case your pet gets out accidentally, I can never stress enough how important ID tags are. <br><br>

ID tags or GPS locator collars can be your dog's lifeline in getting him home before he comes to any harm.

Apr 26, Make Bathtime A Treat For Your Dog

When we wash our hair, the shampoo makes contact with a relatively small area of our skin.

Compare this to a dog being bathed. We're talking about his entire body. Is it any wonder that dog owners have to be very careful in choosing the right shampoo for their dog. Plus, it's pretty common among dog breeds to have skin allergies along with itchiness.

Some of the things to avoid in dog shampoos are SLS, pesticides, phosphates, dyes, parabens etc., which have harmful potential. What we like to see in dog shampoos are bio-degradable, pH balanced plant-based cleansers as well as a dose of soothing herbs to relieve skin itching.

We've made it easy for you to find some worthwhile products to make your dog's bathtime a soothing experience....

Apr 24, Does Your Dog Roam The House At Night?

While it may be a security measure to have your dog on duty at night, it can also undo your diligent housetraining!
And, if your dog urinates in the house while you are sleeping, it may take ages to for you to discover the spot. Plus, your dog may be thinking all the while that this little accident was no big deal and try it again another night in a different spot! Aarg... So the answer is to train him to sleep in a crate - don't worry, he'll wake you up if he needs anything :-)

Apr 22, Potty Training Gone Wrong?

Quite often dog owners confess to not potty training their dogs while they are still puppies. Although it is harder to start this training later, it is possible. It may take longer, but if you go through the potty training steps again, with patience, you will succeed.

One "helping aide" you can try is the indoor dog potty. Purchase two of them - put one inside and the other out. Gradually remove the one inside when your dog recognizes the dog potty as his/her place to go!

Apr 21, An Important Safety Tip!

I was recently reminded of another safety feature of glow-in-the-dark collars other that their use on night time walks, that is sometimes overlooked.

If your pet sleeps in your bedroom at night, there is a real danger of tripping over him on your way to the bathroom. Pets have the habit of moving around the room, so you may never know where they are if you have to get up. A glow in the dark collar could really help prevent this type of accident that could result in injury to both of you.
